Patient Stories
Meet Margaret Beese
When Margaret Beese shattered her hip, the physicians who treated her didn’t have a lot of hope for her regaining her mobility. In fact, their best hope was that she might be able to get in and out of a wheelchair.
That’s when Margaret was referred to Gentiva. Clinician Kimberly Turkvant soon arrived at Margaret’s home and found a determined patient whose goal wasn’t to simply get into a wheelchair. Margaret wanted to see her grandson play golf again and follow his play.
With Kimberly’s expertise and Margaret’s dedication, Margaret was soon able to get around using only a cane for support – just as she did before she broke her hip.
John Evans Story
When John Evans suffered a massive stroke, his life completely changed. Even after a year of rehab, he was bedridden and unable to meet his needs on his own. And he couldn’t speak. His physicians told his wife that she shouldn’t expect him to improve and should consider putting him in a nursing home.
That’s when Gentiva entered his life. Gentiva clinician Heather Hoffman visited John to initiate care in his home and design a plan of care. Heather also learned that John’s daughter Lainee was getting married and wanted her father to attend.
With this goal in mind, Heather and the Gentiva team developed a treatment plan. Determined and persistent, Heather got a wheelchair with a reclining backrest and helped Mr. Evans learn to transfer from the bed to the wheelchair. But that’s not all.
Mr. Evans’ therapy was so successful that he began speaking again and was able to attend the wedding in his new motorized wheelchair. Better yet, he accompanied his daughter down the aisle.
